Imagine an Oreo cookie, but the top part of the cookie doesn’t officially exist. There’s a layer of cream in between the half that is recognized and the half that’s “missing.” But your mother-in-law, even though she currently has the bottom part of the cookie, she’s always wanted that top part, the part that wasn’t technically real. It used to be hers when it was real, fifty years ago. 

Now imagine that the cookie was a little island called Cyprus, and you might get a sense of what I was up against.

First published in 2022 by Phaneromenis70 in Cyprus, TRIO is an exploration of the island of Aphrodite through the eyes of three American visitors.

TRIO features the poetry of janan alexandra, photographs by Caroline Sager, and Harrison Blackman’s short story “Silent G,” about one man’s quest to understand his mother-in-law’s perception of the abandoned ghost town of Varosha. The story is presented in English and in Greek translation.
